Cadet Nationals at Weymouth & Portland Sailing Academy Day 6

by Tony Jaffa 26 Aug 2006 13:10 BST 19-25 August 2006

Katrina and Christopher Brewer from Parkstone Y.C. are the 2006 Cadet National Champions.

In a nail biting finish to the championship, the Brewers kept maintained their position at the head of the fleet by finishing within 3 places of their closest rivals, Hamish Stone and Aaron Woolf from Waldringfield.

Gold and Silver - Race 10

Race 10 was postponed for 2 hours to allow the breeze to fill in. After a general recall, the fleet started in a 5 knot South Westerly, which increased to 12 knots as the race progressed.

As expected, two races developed – one for the bulk of the fleet, and a private battle between the Brewers in Executrix, and Hamish and Aaron in Gnat.

As in previous races, most of the fleet preferred the left hand side of the course, and from this group emerged Ed Impey and Jack Wilson in Touch Wood, Josh Pistol and Lizzie Halling in Pintail, and Josh and Naomi Flack in Nitro, who were first round the windward mark, in this order. They were followed by Ben Cornish and Dominic Langdon in Fantasy (who had gone right on the beat) and Peter Lawrence and Liam Pardy in Hypnosis.

Meanwhile, Executrix and Gnat were match-racing each other, and when they rounded the mark in 10th and 15th places respectively, the Brewers looked to be in a strong position.

The leading positions remained unchanged for the rest of the first lap and the subsequent beat and run. Meanwhile, on the second reach of the first round, Gnat overtook Executrix, and by the top of the following beat, Gnat had moved up to 7th with Executrix rounding in 10th.

However, more drama was in store on the run. The jury imposed a penalty on Executrix for a Rule 42 infringement, which saw the Brewers drop to 14th at the leeward mark, 7 places behind Hamish and Aaron. If this gap could be maintained, it might just be that Gnat would take the title after all.

But the third beat turned out to be the championship decider. With Gnat and the rest of the leading group going right, Executrix worked the shifts up the middle, and clawed their way back to 10th by the windward mark. And with Gnat dropping a place to round in 8th place, the Brewers were definitely back in contention.

On the final round, Katrina and Christopher made sure they stayed close to Hamish and Aaron, and by the finish, with Gnat in 6th place and Executrix 9th, the title had been taken by the Brewers. And as if this was not exciting enough, the final race was turning into a cliff-hanger!

The leading group held their positions for virtually all the race, but on the final run and beat, Hypnosis pulled out all the stops, and at the finish, took the gun by a boatlength from Pintail, with Touch Wood crossing in third, Nitro in fourth, and Fantasy fifth.

This dramatic finish to the race 10 summed up an outstanding championship – drama, excitement, and a demonstration of sailing skill at its very best!

Katrina and Christopher deservedly won the title, and the fact that Hamish and Aaron pushed them so hard right to the very end shows just how competitive this Regatta was.

Huge thanks are due to PRO Roger Wilson and his team, the jurors, the rescue crews co-ordinated by Duncan Eyre, and the shoreside team of volunteers, too numerous to name (but they know who they are!).

And of course, all the competitors (and their parents!) owe a huge debt to the man who shouldered responsibility for making sure everything went smoothly ashore and on the water – Class Chairman Steve Proffitt.
