Sail Northland - Centreboard sailing coach

Start date: September 2020

Sail Northland are looking to appoint an experienced centerboard sailing coach for junior and adult sailors.

They are based in Parua Bay, Whangarei, 2.5 hours north of Auckland, and are a provider of junior learn to sail/race, schools 420 team sailing, adult learn to sail, and school sailing taster programmes.

Responsibilities and duties

- Coaching, managing the sailing programme. Planning courses and content.

- Liaising with sailors, parents, schools and teachers and Sail Northland trustees with regards to course information, registrations

- Setting team and individual goals for our sailors

- Attending and coaching at regattas as necessary

- Developing, reviewing and implementing sailing programme procedures, risk management, safety plans and documentation

- In conjunction with Sail Northland's boat master, maintain sailing equipment, safety boats - keep them looking good, safe and in good working order at all times

- Maintain SNCT policies and safety standards and local bylaws at all times

- Provide leadership and guidance to junior coaches

- Assist and work alongside our part-time coaches as required

- Updating Facebook and social media sites

Coach specific requirements

- Yachting New Zealand learn to sail and racing coach qualification or equivalent (RYA instructor, Yachting Australia instructor etc)

- Previous LTS, racing and race coaching experience

- RIB drivers' qualification

- Current first aid qualification

- Ability to operate a full range of small sailboats and motorboats safely

- Flexible with work hours

- Excellent verbal and written communication skills (competent in English language)

- Excellent organisational and time management skills, a positive attitude and ability to work independently as well as part of a team

- Excellent computer skills

- The successful applicant will report to the SNCT trustees and complete an end-of-season report to the SNCT trustees. The role will require communication between part-time coaches.

The coach can expect to work 20-30 hours a week, although there is room for negotiation / flexibility on this. Sessions run after school, during the day and day-long programmes during one or two weeks of the school holidays. Some travel to regattas will be required.

NZIODA Administrator

The NZIODA Administrator is responsible for providing general administrative support, event coordination and take minutes for monthly NZIODA meetings to help ensure the efficient and smooth running of the Association.

Key Duties

Administration tasks (70%)

- Answering incoming emails, Facebook messages or enquires and re-directing as required - Taking minutes

- Diary management and arranging appointments, booking meetings and facilities

- Data entry

- Arranging both internal and external events

- Maintaining the associations website and social media

- Providing administration support to the NZIODA President

- Coordinating NZIODA regattas with various yacht clubs around the country.

- Booking IODA regattas for traveling teams

- Coordinating NZIODA camps / clinics across the year

- Attend NZIODA regattas and assist with regatta administration

Health and Safety compliance (10%)

- Record and investigate incidents to determine causes in incident register

Accounts (in conjunction with the Treasurer) (20%)

- Bookkeeping using the Xero Accounting Package

- Payment of all invoices including international fund transfers

- Overseeing of travelling team accounts and communications with team managers

- Overseeing Eastern Beach/South Island Camp/ Whangaparoa Camp accounts and communications with camp organisers

- Collection, reconciliation and follow up of association membership fees

General Responsibilities

- Be punctual and work the hours and times specified

Previous experience

Pier21 - weekend dry stack operator

Pier21 are looking for a weekend dry stack operator to work alongside their drystack operator on every second weekend (7.30am-5pm) and possibly some school vacation time. Full training will be given and uniform supplied.

Some boating knowledge and experience with water craft is preferred.

Skipper & sailing instructor wanted to lead teen sailing programmes

Broadreach are leaders in experiential programmes abroad for middle school through college aged students. Over the past 26 years, more than 18,000 students have travelled with Broadreach to over 40 countries.

Their mission is to challenge students to broaden their perspectives through new experiences and environments, to inspire them to develop lifelong skills, to discover and explore their passions, and to empower them to reach beyond limitations and take charge of their future.

Broadreach are an IYT (International Yacht Training) partner school and offers courses from Introduction to Yachting to Bareboat Skipper.

Skippers lead summer live-aboard diving, sailing and marine science programmes in the Caribbean aboard 40-55 ft. catamarans and monohulls.

Skippers teach sailing lessons and, along with their co-leaders, facilitate positive group dynamics, lead games, assist students with cooking and cleaning duties along with cultivating personal growth and leadership development in their students. Their staff prioritise safety and are energetic role models who excel in building meaningful relationships with their students. Leading a Broadreach programme is a fun, rewarding, and demanding position.

Broadreach maintain a small group size of 12 students or less led by two or three instructors. Programmes range from 12 to 37 days and can be challenging for students and instructors, which makes a positive demeanor essential. Their strongest instructors are flexible, team players who excel in quickly-changing scenarios, while maintaining a supportive, fun, and cohesive community.

Contracts range from four to 10 weeks in length from early June through late August.

Qualifications:

- Licensed US Coast Guard Captain, Yachtmaster or equivalent experience

- Comfort operating a yacht over 45 feet from standard operations to sail training

- Small boat handling skills as staff regularly operate RIBs and small boats with 6hp to 50hp outboards

- Able to confidently maneuver in tight harbors and anchorages under power

- Understanding of basic yacht and diesel engine maintenance

- Experience in multi-day sailing trips/deliveries/chartering

- Experience working with teens or young adults required; experience teaching sailing to youth ideal

- Strong decision making and problem solving skills, able to work without direct supervision and adaptable to often changing, dynamic environments

- Passion for mentoring and motivating students

- Physically fit and able to participate in outdoor activities such as hiking, snorkeling, etc

- Demonstrated success working on diverse teams with a collaborative mindset

- Great communication skills and a professional demeanor to serve as a Broadreach ambassador

- Able to attend staff training in St. Martin the first week of June

Preferred Skills & Attributes:

- Experience teaching sailing to teens or young adults or significant experience working with youth in a mentorship capacity

- Experience leading teens or young adults on multi-day programmes

- Significant international travel experience

- Open availability from early June to mid-August increases chance of placement

- Wilderness First Responder certification or higher or willingness to obtain before programme

TYPBC Sailing School Race Coach

Start Date: September 2020

Tauranga Yacht and Power Boat (TYPBC) is looking to appoint a qualified and experienced Race Coach to lead their sailing programme for 2020 and 2021 seasons:

Based in Tauranga Harbour, 2 half hours from Auckland, New Zealand; TYPBC has a strong history of producing Olympic and America's Cup champions.

The TYPBC Sailing School offers Learn to Sail and Race programmes to youth and adults in Optimist, Open Skiff, P Class, Starling, Laser, Schools 420 team racing and Windsurfing along with school sailing taster programmes.

Race Coach Duties and Responsibilities:

- Coaching and Managing the race programme

- Planning courses and course content

- Maintaining a record of Race Coaching revenues and expenses

- Liaising with sailors, parents, schools and teachers and TYPBC Centreboard committee with regards to course information, registration, invoicing

- Setting team and individual sailing goals

Race Coach Specific Requirements

- Yachting New Zealand Learn to Sail and Racing Coach qualification or equivalent (RYA Instructor, Yachting Australia Instructor etc)

- Previous racing and race coaching experience

- Maintaining the sailing equipment, safety boats and facility, keeping them looking good, safe and in good working order at all times.

- Maintain Club policies and safety standards and local bylaws at all times.

- Complete an end of season report to the TYPBC executive

- The management, induction and programming and debriefing of Junior Coaches.

- Powerboat driver's qualification and current First Aid qualification

- Ability to operate a full range of small sailboats and motorboats safely

- Flexible with working hours

- Excellent verbal and written communication skills (competent in English language)

- Excellent organisation and time management skills, a positive attitude and ability to work independently as well as being a part of a team.

- Excellent computer skills (MS Word, Excel, email, social media and website)

Reporting:

- The role reports to the TYPBC Club Manager

- The role will require communication between Race and LTS Coaches to ensure both programmes are run effectively

- Coaches can expect between 30 and 40 hours per week. Programmes run week day time, after school and on weekends, with day long programmes during school holidays. Some travel to regattas will also be required.

Onsite shared accommodation is available and shared use of a club car.
