Adventures Weekly with Terry Hutchinson: We will head to NZ potentially in July

For Adventures Weekly on 13 June 2020 we welcomed Terry Hutchinson, the skipper of American Magic, the New York Yacht Club Challenger for the next America's Cup. Some great insights for the next Cup and from his sixteen World Championship wins in a variety of top-line classes, from the J/24, to the Farr 40 Class, TP52 Class and the Maxi72 Worlds.

We had a significant chat with Terry Hutchinson about his history with sailing, in particular the America's Cup, and when American Magic can be expected to be on the water in New Zealand. This was especially timely, as the teams now have a window for exemption to enter New Zealand, and if all goes well, Tery says they could be training from as early as 20 July.

"Things have gone very well for the team," said Terry. "The New Zealand Government, I would say, from our perspective have done a really good job managing a really tough situation. We are incredibly thankful for the fact that they've given us our exemptions into the country." "Defiance is on her way there right now, she is about 500 miles west of Mexico, on her way into the south pacific and on her way into Auckland. She should be there around the 25th or 26th of this month".

"With the exemption there is a process that is going to take place in getting team members and family members in there".

"We are waiting for some comms from the New Zealand governing body, who is helping us through this" he continued "and making sure that when we come into New Zealand we are doing it in a fashion that doesn't put a massive burden on the system".

"We will try to as best we possibly can when we integrate into the community so that we are safe and smart and respectful of the opportunity we are being given".

"If it goes really well we will sail around the 20th of July, if it goes really poorly, nothing to do with New Zealand, when I say if it goes well or poorly, it's just our logistics and stuff like that".

We also went over the themed trivia competition from this week, brought to you by Pantaenius Yacht Insurance! Congrats to our winner for this week, @steakountry, who along with winning a prize pack from Pantaenius, will also join each of the winners of the weekly video competition for our major prize draw in December of this year!

COMPETITION DETAILS

This week we will feature the Newport Bermuda Race in retrospect, going over our memories from the 2018 edition and chat about how you can get involved with the online race this year! All live on our Facebook page. 2300 BST / 1800 EDT Thursday and 0800 AEST Friday!
