Scorpion Nationals at Paignton Sailing Club – Days 6 & 7

by Simon Holden 6 Aug 2006 12:18 BST 29 July - 4 August 2006

For day 6 of the 2006 Scorpion Nationals the wind had moderated to a force 1 – 3 with patchy shifts. In the first of the two short races that were scheduled, Chris Turner and Simon Maguire battled for the lead with Tom Jeffcoate and Andy Smith with Turner and Maguire triumphant at the line. Peter and Andrew Rose finished third.

Race 2 was started after a short break but had to be abandoned after the first lap when the wind first died then patchily filled in from different directions. After the restart, Jeffcoate and Smith got away for the win. The Roses, showing their light airs skills, were second. Turner and Maguire took third place, a result sufficient to give them the overall championship.

The final day started with the fleet being held on the beach to allow a sea breeze to develop. After an hour’s postponement racing was started. A general recall saw the black flag come out, and even then it took two goes to get the race successfully under way. Tim Parsons and Sarah Maguire tussled with Peter and Andrew Rose, pipping them on the line for the win. John Mursell and Nick Keast were third, a result sufficient to give them second overall.
