Fat Face RS800 Eurocup at Riva del Garda, Lake Garda, Italy

by Sarah Marriott 30 Jul 2006 23:28 BST

Living the dream...

Finally after two years of waiting the RS 800 fleet were let loose in the playground of Riva Del Garda! 55 RS 800s made the trip to the sailing Mecca to challenge for the Fat Face Euro Cup 2006.

The conditions were hot, hot, hot with a steady force four on most days. No seriously scary blows but more than enough wind to test the boat handling, layline calls and weight equalisation system!

Before the event began there were about six teams who, on paper, could steal the show, but only one of them shone through when put to the test.

Pete Barton and Roz Allen (Henri Lloyd) simply flew off the start line to post two first places on day one. While all attempts were made to ruin Pete and Roz’s performance at the Occa bar, nothing was going to stop this pair from winning! The trend was set and from then on their worst result after 8 races was a mere 2nd place!

In second place over all were David and Robert Pike from Eastbourne. After pushing some good consistent top five results in the bag, they kept their cool all the way through to take their best ever result in an 800 event – and what a place to do it!

Rounding off the podium were Andy Jeffries & Alyson Ody who sailed their socks off all week and posted everything on the score board from a first place to a DNF as their mast came crashing down! But their consistency at the beginning of the week coupled with excellent event preparation in the form of their spare mast(!) meant a solid third place for them!

Congratulations to Pete and Roz for a stunning performance, our new Fat Face Euro Cup champions for 2006!

A huge thank you must go to all involved in the event organisation and to Fat Face for once again supporting one of the best events of the year! Next stop is Weston Sailing club on August 13-14th August for training and racing and the penultimate Fat Face event takes place in Plymouth the weekend afterwards – come on and be part of it!
