The SB20 Asian Grand Slam Week from 5-9 February 2020 at ONE degrees15 Marina Sentosa Cove has been a great practice regatta for the SB20 World Championship 2021. Two regattas were arranged back to back, with 9 teams competing in the Singapore National Championship and a record breaking 25 teams in the Asia Pacific Championship.

During five days of sailing, race officer Jonathan Kwek and his team have flagged off 19 upwind-downwind races with only three general recalls and one abandoned race. The predictable February monsoon provided a north easterly breeze with 10 to 20 knots every day. With the breeze coming off land, the wind had a habit of shifting in both strength and direction, giving the sailors many strategical challenges. The sailing conditions for the World Championship next year are expected to be similar to what the sailors experienced this year and will provide excitement throughout the regatta.

Singaporean sailors did impressively well in their familiar waters and took home two of the podium places. Xtra Mile2, helmed by Olympic sailor Xu Yuan Zhen and crewed by SSF's general manager Chung Pei Ming, Asian 420 Champion Jeremiah Guo and Dr Low Chin Nam finished third after very solid sailing.

The students from National University of Singapore team 1, with Jonathan Yeo, Matthew Scott Lau, Amos Huang, and Chantelle Chen also impressed with their ability to manoeuvre around the wind shifs and finished second overall.

Last year's winner and favourite before the regatta, team Glasgow Kiss with Nils Razmilovic, Nik Burfoot and David Salambier won the trophy once again and are one of the favourites for the world championship next year.

The Singaporean fleet met very strong competition from international visitors, and both the Australian team, Porco Rosso, with Paul McCartney, David Chapman and Edward Snowball, and the French team, Skin in the Game with Ed Russo, Gilles

Favennec and Boniface Constant were repeatedly seen in the top of the fleet. 14 nationalities were represented during the week of sailing, and nine Singaporean university teams have been on the start line from four institutions.

ONE degrees15 Marina Sentosa Cove has, together with volunteers from Singapore Sailing Federation and SB20 Association of Singapore tested their ability to host a high standard international sailing regatta, and the conclusion is that event has been a great success! The sailors have been blessed with exciting sailing conditions, smoothly arranged races and have been greeted back on the dock with cold beers at the brilliant floating Boater's Bar.

For the next year's World Championship, international teams will be encouraged to ship their boats to Singapore. This process will be both coordinated and subsidised by the SB20 Singapore Worlds organising committee. There will also be boats available for charter.

ONE degrees15 Marina, Singapore Sailing Federation and SB20 Association of Singapore are now well prepared for the next years SB20 World Championship and truly look forward to welcoming sailors from all around the world.
