The 2020 Hempel World Cup Series kicked off today in Miami with a solid day of racing. Completing all scheduled races, Biscayne Bay brought some big variations in pressure with shifts of 15 to 20 degrees with lots of opportunities to make gains or suffer losses.

First to get on the water were the Finns. Kyle Martin set the tone with a 2nd and 4th place finish, placing him in 3rd overall. "We had some shifty and puffy conditions out there" mentions CSDS athlete, "but we were able to get some good racing in. There is decent competition here, which will make for an interesting week and I'm feeling confident going into tomorrow."

In the RS:X, Olivia Mew led the Canadian windsurfers sitting in 6th overall after some solid racing, she comments "overall I think today went really well, these are the types of conditions I like and I executed the things I've been working hard on."

Competition is tough for the men in the Laser. Being the biggest fleet of the regatta, the battle is that much harder for the North Americain spot to Tokyo. Three of our Canadian sailors stayed to the top of the fleet throughout today's races. Leading the group is Luke Ruitenberg (CSDS) sitting in 5th overall with a 9 & 8 place finish throughout the two races. "The focus is all about staying consistent" he comments, "because of the unstable conditions I was concentrated on making the high percentage moves and then that evened out to some decent races."

Fellow teammate, Robert Davis (CST) is currently sitting in 6th, with Matti Muru (CSDS) not far behind in 10th overall.

The wind is supposed to pick up for day 2 of racing tomorrow. Stay tuned for more updates throughout the day!
