Notts County First of Year Race

by David Eberlin 3 Jan 2020 15:31 GMT 1 January 2020

The first of the year at Notts County Sailing Club on 1st January 2020 was cool (5'c in and out of the water), overcast, but at least there was a light breeze.

The wind was swinging up to 30' so Race Officers Nadina Lincoln and William Jeffcote decided on a double beat with two slightly different beats to allow for any swings. A wise decision as about five seconds before the first start the wind swung giving quite a few early arrivals at the pin end a poor start, but no one was over as a result!

The racing was split fast and slow along with a junior and windsurfing start but results amalgamated for the adult fleet. The racing was close and with over 50 boats including 5 juniors and 8 windsurfers it was quite crowded. Competitors came from all over the East Midlands to take part in the traditional New Year's Day event, and quite a few old timers were spotted chatting in the bar.

After the results complied it was the Notts County's Kevin Hope and Andy Stewart from Notts County in their Fireball who won by a small margin from Nigel & Diane Pepperdine from Staunton Harold in an RS200 with Jamie Mawson in his RS600 from Notts County third overall. Kevin & Andy won the Goeff Parker Memorial trophy and Nigel & Diane the Phil Davies Cup. Sarah Mason was first lady helm.

The Juniors saw Sam Grayton win in a Topper with Hayden Moore second and Cillian Dyne third. The Windsurfers saw Guy Sprekley enjoying the racing on his huge sail, so the trophy went to Sue Spreckley with Duncan Monaghan winning the Juniors.

Martin Hart standing in for the Commodore thanked all who helped, said that the event had raised £300 split between RNLI and Sailability, and reminded everyone that the East Midlands Mini series starts in just over 2 weeks on 18/18th January at Notts County.
