Cork Week at the Royal Cork Yacht Club - Day 1

by Jean Kearney 18 Jul 2006 07:02 BST 15-21 July 2006

Light conditions dominated the opening day of Cork Week at Crosshaven yesterday (Monday) as the estimated 5000 sailors began racing in the five series that is one of the highlights of the international sailing season.

After a prolonged delay in a near calm, a gentle sea breeze started with enough force to keep the fleet racing for a couple of legs so that results could be scored. Forecasts of ten knots for Tuesday offer some hope of relief and a full race programme.

Benny Kelly's Transpac 52 emerged overall leader of Class Super Zero, home of the exotics including Bill Buckley and Charlie Browns' Maximus who fell foul of the short course and light airs to finish second from last in the class.

Colm Barrington's new Kerr 50 footer Magic Glove scored first in Class Zero after a runaway lead against 15 other contenders.

Elsewhere in the 402 boat combined entry, Ian Southworth leads the Laser SB3 class while the largest racing fleet in Class 2 is being led by Donal O'Leary's X-35 D-Tox.
