VX One ACT State Titles at Canberra Yacht Club - Form Guide

by Brett Whitbread 20 Nov 2019 23:12 GMT

The VX One ACT State Titles kicks off this Saturday at Canberra Yacht Club with 11 entries on the books from VIC, NSW and ACT. It's looking like a very similar line up to that at Metung for the VIC states four weeks ago with Canberra promising a 10 to 15 knot NWer and over 30 degrees.

I'm sure a cold one will be very welcome by all at the end of racing. So what's the line up looking like?

Let's look at our top performers. Well it's sure that Brian Case on Slick out of Geelong will be the boat to beat. He took out the recent VIC states and put in a solid performance at the last Nationals. He's not just Slick, he's fast! Following hot on his heals at VIC and the Nats and taking out last year's ACT Titles is Fred Kasparek on Weapon Of Choice. It's home turf for Freddo, he's an old salty dog when it comes to the lake and will be as keen as the mustard on his kranskies to take this one out. This will be a great battle to watch.

The rest of the fleet will likely be close and hotly contested with not much to separate them. The boys on Public Enemy from Geelong will be wanting to follow up their third place result at the VIC States showing that they can go fast and be consistent, as did Victoria's Secret from Brighton, so expect these boats to be well in it. Local boats Let's Be Natural and Allegro will be wanting to show the others how to play the shifts on the old Burley Griffin, so we may see them move up the ranks a bit this regatta.

NSW boats Miss Jekyll and Formula Pye are no slouches and have both proven that they can sail fast and the other VIC travellers KC and Mongoose are well within contention for a good result. Lastly the new owners of local boat Puff will on the water giving their best. These guys are new to sailing, especially in something like the VX, but are learning super-fast and it won't be long before we see them moving up the ranks.

Seriously it can be anyone's game on the lake, everyone has a chance to do well and sometimes even the top sailors have a shocker. What is definite is that everyone will have a great time. There's an impromptu gathering at the Gryphon's pub for those travellers arriving early on Friday night, and a BBQ at Freddo's on Saturday (I wasn't joking about Freddo's mustard and kranskies). So it's game on, party on!
