Another record entry at Filey Regatta

175 boats from a wide range of classes took part in last weekend’s event. This record entry smashed 2004’s record entry of boats by 33!

The Arndale based Filey Sailing Club managed the event well, both on and off the water within excess of 400 people at the event sailing and supporting their family and friends – spanning a wide age range.

12 classes of dinghy competed along with 2 general handicap fleets on 2 courses in Filey bay creating a spectacular sight for all to see. The racing was staged mainly by Filey members with some support from club friends, with Filey Race officers Peter Crooks and James Whitehead in charge of the racing.

The weather played its part in making this Regatta an outstanding event. It was mainly fine, plenty of sun, good visibility and of course the much needed wind. The fleets took to the water on Saturday afternoon after registration for a 1.30pm start, racing in wind strengths of around force 3. The wind fell away on Saturday evening but returned early on Sunday morning increasing in strength to around force 4 and 5 with gusts coming through touching force 6.

Some competitors decided not to join the start line but the bulk of the competitors took to the water and they were assured of challenging, conditions and exciting sailing. All the dinghies returned to shore safely and for some of the sailors it was their first experience of sailing on the sea!

Off the water Filey SC looked after their traveling guests providing a BBQ for 140 people on Saturday evening as well as a licensed bar on both Friday and Saturday night. Almost all of the visitors stayed over locally camping and staying in the hotels and guest houses in and around Filey.

The sport of sailing is increasing in popularity all over the country and Filey SC finds itself an ever popular venue – experiencing event enquiries to host National and European championships from leading classes of boat.

Windward Leeward Course Report: (by James Whitehead)

Fleets of RS200s, Musto Performance Skiffs, RS800s and a General handicap fleet took part in the Windward/Leeward sector of the Annual Filey Regatta held on the 8th and 9th of July. The Regatta attracted a record turnout of 175 boats. The sun beat down and the wind blew.

The weekend was a great chance for the Musto Skiffs to try out Filey's awsome bay again before their Nationals to be held there in August. Three races sailed back to back on Saturday in a SW Force 3 and a Further 3 races back to back on Sunday in a SW force 5.

The general Handicap fleet was made up of RS Vareos, B14s a RS700, 29er and 405. This course is proving to be a growing success at the regatta as the fast asymetric boats can stretch their legs and hold on for the ride at the best sailing venue on the east coast.
