2019 Victorian VX One Championships at Metung Yacht Club

by Brian Case 1 Nov 2019 05:27 GMT 26-27 October 2019

Metung Yacht Club on the famous Gippsland Lakes hosted the 2019 Victorian VX One Championships with 12 boats facing the starter in this rapidly growing Class. Three competitors came from the ACT's Canberra fleet and two from NSW.

A very competitive fleet left the marina on the Saturday only to be sent back ashore when wild westerly winds forced other activities for the day. It was all on for Sunday with a very sharp Race Management team changing a few things to ensure a fantastic days racing producing four vey tight races in 10-15 knots of wind. In the end the winner was decided by countback with Brian Case's Slick sailing with wife Sue and son Michael taking the title for the second year from Freddo Kasparek's Weapon of Choice from Canberra. Third overall was the much improved Public Enemy sailed by Jarrod Wallis and Peter Rechenberg.

An initiative that was successful was including a Junior element with local ribs transferring youngsters from the growing Metung Junior Sailing Program onto VX1's once across the finish line after the final race for a blast in. Was fantastic to see their faces light up when steering and getting a feel for modern sailing.

Metung Yacht Club did a fantastic job in conducting this event, was very pro-active and the facilities were first class.
