Leader Open at Melton Mowbray Sailing Club

by Jane Wharmby 4 Jul 2006 22:16 BST 1 July 2006

8 boats (4 visitors and 4 local teams) competed in 30 degree temperatures and light winds at the Leader Open Event at Melton Mowbray SC on 1 July.

As ever there was a very warm welcome from the local boats and stiff competition for the four travellers who came from Welwyn Garden City, Milton Keynes SC, Deben YC and Hunts SC. A special welcome to Chris Surfleet and crew, Ade, who were attending their first event.

Mike and Val Sherwen of Deben YC sailed consistently well all day and won each of the three races by a convincing margin – celebrating their success with a quick dip in the lake after the final race! Chris and Jane Wharmby of Milton Keynes SC came 2nd in each race, and local team Byron James and Viv came 3rd in Races 1 and 2 but didn’t compete in the final race.

Roger Morse from Welwyn Garden SC was crewed by his wife, Sybil, who after many years of cheering Roger on from the sidelines was competing in only her second event. Their results improved throughout the day, and resulted in a 3rd place in the final race. All day they enjoyed close battles with local teams, Bob Rhodes and Paul Dickinson and Peter Driver and Annette.

Likewise newcomers Chris and Ade fought some close battles with Ron Stimpson and Mel.

A great lunch of Pork Pie and Stilton ploughmans was enjoyed by all (thanks to Sue Driver and her team).

After a good day’s sailing helms, crews and supporters retired to the Bell in Frisby on the Wreake to enjoy a well-earned meal and to drown any sorrows at England exiting the World Cup.

On Sunday morning, the travelling boats plus the Morris family moved on to Rutland Water to fly the Leader flag in the annual Rutland Classic race and were rewarded with a photo on the front page of the Rutland SC website!

Overall Results:

1st Mike and Val Sherwen, Leader 26, Deben YC
2nd Chris and Jane Wharmby, Leader 1083, Milton Keynes SC
3rd Byron James and Viv, Leader 1140, Melton Mowbray SC
4th Roger and Sybil Morse, Leader 118, Welwyn Garden City SC
5th Peter Driver and Annette, Leader 1192, Melton Mowbray SC
6th Bob Rhodes and Paul Dickinson, Leader 1255, Melton Mowbray SC
7th Ron Stimpson and Mel, Leader 1116, Melton Mowbray SC
8th Chris Surfleet and Ade, Leader 1166, Hunts SC
