Laser Thames Valley Series Open at Frensham Pond Sailing Club

by Chris Brown 25 Sep 2019 10:34 BST 14 September 2019

Frensham Pond Sailing Club held its annual Laser Open Meeting on Saturday 14 September. Despite some extremely light winds forecast 24 boats took to the water to complete the 4 scheduled races, superbly organised by Race Officer, Chris Ellis. As part of the Thames Valley Laser circuit, the Open meeting welcomed nine travelling sailors spread across both Standard and Radial fleets.

While the sun shone throughout the day, the wind became ever more shifty and light as the day progressed. So courses were shortened and skill, patience and a little local knowledge helped separate sailors. Good starts and clean air became key with race positions typically secured in the first two legs.

The younger, lighter sailors also had an advantage but that did not stop local Frensham man, Andy Shorrock topping the Standard competition, winning all bar one race with Frensham youngsters, Rebecca Videlo and Megan Ferguson fighting for and securing second and third places respectively.

Alastair Brown from Great Moor SC did outstandingly well, winning the Radial competition with local lad, Luke Anstey and Ed Brown from Broxbourne SC, last year's winner, gaining equal points for second.

Club Commodore, Jeremy Hudson presented prizes in the club house and a challenging day finished off with the customary 'Frensham Tea'.
