Allstate Sugar Bowl Regatta - Overall: Tulane sailing team finishes second

The Tulane sailing team finished the Allstate Sugar Bowl Regatta in an impressive second-place position on Sunday, falling only to defending national champion College of Charleston on Lake Pontchartrain.
"Today was another great day for us," head coach Charles Higgins said. With the breeze being a little lighter today, we optimized our boat pairings for the conditions and everyone showed today that yesterday's great performance was no fluke."
The Green Wave totaled 348 points between the three divisions after 18 total races, coming just short of catching the first-place Cougars with 326.
A Tulane boat finished in first place in seven of the nine races on the final day of action, totaling 11 first-place finishes among the two days.
Tulane's women's A Division team - with skipper Ciara Rodriguez-Horan and crews Amelia Schofield and Grace Siwicki - won the regatta and totaled 130 points after 18 races on the water, while recording three first-place finishes to finish out competition on Sunday.
Skipper Cameron Giblin, alongside crews Quinn Keenan and Katie Cartiglia, earned a second-place finish overall and within the coed B Division. The trio totaled just 86 points in the two-day regatta, winning three races on the final day of sailing while finishing in the top ten in all but one race.
Skipper Caroline Benson took over for Asher Zittrer in the coed C Division boat, soling alongside crews Lydia Brown and Kara Scully. The freshmen posted a successful performance on the water, finishing in the top five in seven of the nine races.
"Caroline [Benson], along with Lydia [Brown] and Kara [Scully] did outstanding, and had the lowest point total on the day," Higgins said. "Cameron [Giblin] and Katie [Cartiglia] were again very solid on the day and should be quite pleased with finishing second overall. Ciara [Rodriguez-Horan with Grace [Siwicki] and yesterday with Amelia [Schofield] were the top women's boat on the weekend."
The British Universities Sailing Allstar Team finished in third place with 483 points, followed by UC Santa Barbara with 598, Old Dominion with 656 and Jacksonville with 675.
Tulane hits the road and heads to New England next weekend to sail in the Women's Showcase Semi-finals on Saturday and Sunday in New London, Connecticut.
"The fact that we sailed so solidly with so many new faces, and then beat several very good teams, shows that we have come a long way," Higgins said. "We're very much looking forward to the next event where hopefully we can turn some more heads and show what I know we're capable of."
