Melges 24 Pre-worlds 2019 in Villasimius, Italy - Day 2

by International Melges 24 Class Association 21 Sep 2019 11:58 BST 20-22 September 2019

Second day of racing in Villasimius for the eve event of the Melges 24 World Championship 2019: the fleet completes three more races, which are added to those disputed yesterday, bringing to six the total of the series up to this moment and taking into play the discard of the worst result for all the crews.

Bombarda ITA860 (7-4-1 today) by Andrea Pozzi, with Matteo Ivaldi on tactics, retains control of the provisional ranking, taking the bullet in the sixth race and resisting on several occasions the attacks of Robert Bakoczy's helmed FGF Sailing Team HUN728 which, with partial scores of 2-1-2, is the best boat of the day and has narrowed the gap to Bombarda to just 5 points. Excellent day also for the Corinthian crew of Marco Zammarchi's Taki 4 ITA778 with Niccolo Bertola in helm (1-5-3) which climbs up to third place in the general standings and stands firmly at the top of its division ranking.

The overall top five is completed by the reigning World Champions onboard Andrea Racchelli's Altea ITA722 (5-3-UFD) in fourth place and by the Canadian Richard Reid's Zingara CAN853 (3-7-16) in fifth.

The Corinthian division, led by the already named Taki 4, sees Tõnu Tõniste's Lenny EST790 (6-9-5, seventh in overall) occupying the second place, immediately followed by Michael Tarabochia's White Room GER677 (14-14-4) with Luis Tarabochia helming, both in the overall and Corinthian standings.

With conditions similar to those of today (Northerly breeze and choppy seas), tomorrow the last races of the Pre-Worlds will take place with the first warning signal on midday.

Then, the appointment is set to October 8th, for the first race of the World Championship.
