Perth Sailing Club ACH Series Update

by Bob Watson 14 Aug 2019 05:16 BST 5-6 August 2019

Six boats completed in Monday's first race in a strong easterly breeze. John Ferguson sailing the club's Yellow Laser was first over the line after the two laps with Euan MacDonald in his RS Aero a close second and James Curley in his Solo Bear in third. Anne Bryson helming the Enterprise crewed by Bob Watson capsized at the downwind mark on the first leg, rejoining the race after draining the boat.

Peter Bevan sailing the Phantom Cormorant joined in for the second race of the evening leading the field from start to finish. James Curley in his Solo crossed the line in second place with Euan a close third in his RS Aero.

Four boats took to the water for the first race on Tuesday evening with a light force 1-2 variable NE, E and SE wind throughout. Three laps were sailed of a short triangular course. There was a moderate flood tide during the time with a great volume of water going downstream. Euan Macdonald helming his RS Aero led ahead of John Ferguson followed by Hunter Williamson's Solo with James Curley to the rear. These positions remained the same until the third round when because of the lessening wind the final round was finished at the downwind mark with the safety boat providing the line with John crossing first followed by Euan with Hunter in 3rd position.

Lack of wind and diminishing light precluded a 2nd race. Meanwhile new members Grant Hill and his young son took out a Club Quest for practice, Jamie helming for most of the time, the safety boat occasionally pulling them back further up river of the Club and then coming ashore smiling - despite the rain.

Whilst the rest of the country suffered the extremes of wet and windy weather over the weekend such was the micro climate of Perth that the Annual Perth Sailing Regatta was cancelled due to no wind! However the Regatta BBQ was not cancelled and was well attended by Club members, friends and family. The Commodore would like to thank Eric Taylor for his excellent BBQ'ing skills and all those who brought a delicious selection of salads and puddings that were enjoyed by all.
