Laser Midlands Grand Prix Round 12 at Midland Sailing Club

by Phil Deeley 24 Jul 2019 07:09 BST 21 July 2019

On Sunday 21st July Midland Sailing Club welcomed competitors from around the Midlands to Edgbaston Reservoir to compete in the 12th of 19 meetings of the Laser Midlands Grand Prix series.

Weather was warm and overcast with breaks in the cloud. Wind was SW 9-13 knots, giving shifty conditions. Race officer Chris Martin set a course giving good downwind and upwind legs. In the first race James Dalby, John Ling and Neil Crosby (Radial) were first over the line, James and John holding their lead to come 1st and 2nd, followed by Joe Scurrah 3rd. Neil Crosby came in 6th place.

In the second race John Ling and James Dalby again had a good start and were first over the line, James nearer the pin and John at the committee boat end which led to John being in 5th place by the first leeward mark. Simon Stonehouse arrived there first, followed by Chris Winters and Joe Scurrah. Chris Winters then gained a place and maintained his lead until the final lap, while John Ling gained places to finish in second place.

The wind backed to SSW and with a new course there were four contenders to win. Joe Scurrah, Chris Winters and John Ling were first over the line. Joe led by a good distance to take 1st for race and event. An infringement put Simon Stonehouse 2nd, and Simon Hardiman 3rd.

Three 4.7 rig sailors sailed closely throughout the three races, with Carys Attwell achieving 9th place, Megan Hardiman 10th and Harry Marlow 12th. Overall winners of the event were Joe Scurrah 1st, James Dalby 2nd and Chris Winters 3rd. Thanks are due to all involved for a successful event and an excellent days sailing.
