2019 Melges 20 World League European Division at Riva del Garda - Day 1

by Melges 20 Eurpean Class Association 12 Jul 2019 19:40 BST 14-16 June 2019

The first day of racing for the final leg of the Melges 20 World League 2019 European Division opens with a surprise, since both regattas completed today, as well as the provisional general standings, are dominated by Corinthian teams.

A result that is in some ways unexpected, considering the high technical level of the Class, but that at the same time confirms, once again, the high level of performances of teams composed of non-professionals sailors in the Melges 20 fleet.

The first regatta sees the success of Alexander Mikhaylik's Corinthian crew of Alex of Team, leaving behind the Argentinian Boogie 2.0 of Pierluigi Giannattasio (with Giulio Desiderato at tactics) and the Czech Aloha of Jan Kuchar (together with Martin Trcka) while Igor Rytov's Russian Bogatyrs, leader of the European division so far, does not go beyond the fifteenth place.

The second race also goes to a Corinthian team, the Italian Siderval by Marco Giannini (circuit leaders in their category) who precede on the finish line the American Cinghiale of Robert Wilber (assisted by Charlie Mckee) and the Italians of Gone Squatching by Pietro Loro Piana (with Francesco Ivaldi).

The general ranking of the event after two regattas sees Siderval lead with a solid 9-point advantage over the pair of pursuers represented by the Russian teams of Meduza by Pavel Grachev and Pirogovo by Alexender Ezhkov.

Putting the spotlight on the boats who are on the go to win the 2019 Melges 20 World League European Division Circuit, Russian Bogatyrs today suffers and scores 15-6 as partials and by now occupies the tenth place, preceded by the direct opponent for the leaderhip, Boogie 2.0, that occupies the eighth place (2.18 partial).

Tomorrow the race course of Riva del Garda will once again be the scene of this challenge to define, only on Sunday, the name of the event winner and Melges 20 World League 2019 European Division Champion.

The Melges 20 World League is supported by Helly Hansen, North Sails, Tiirenia, Quantum Sails, Garmin Marine, La Thuile, Rocket Performance, Revi Trento Doc, Loison Pasticceri dal 1938, Rigoni di Asiago, Dai Dai, Norda, XPouf, Le Formiche di Fabio Vettori, boutique hotel Rifugio Azul (Minorca) and Rifugio hotel Lilla (La Thuile), One Ocean Foundation; the season is also supported by Team Partners UYN (thanks to Brontolo and G3Bau Sailing Team;) l'Enoteca and Camarca Caffè (thanks to Fra Martina Sailing Team).

Learn to love sailing in heavy air
