Squib National Championship at Royal Torbay Yacht Club - Day 5

The 51st Squib National Championship race 5 for the Founder's Trophy and daily prizes sponsored by Batt Sails was sailed in champagne conditions in a steady force 4 to 5 from the north east. A clean start with some congestion at the committee boat end resulted in the boats at the port end having a small advantage.
At the windward mark Helmut Hydeing, Nigel and Jack Grogan, just lee bowed Esseyess (849) Phil Snewin and Brian Holland from SCYC to take the lead. Aquabat and Grayling were just behind. A very tricky run with multiple place changing and at the next windward mark, Squiggle and Allegro(134), Colm Dunne and Rob Gill from Kinsale had progressed into contention. Squiggle eventually took the lead and was never headed for the rest of the race. The Grogans were second and Allegro third.
Richard Smith in Flame 802, leading in the Silver fleet, sailed well into 4th. RicO'Shea, yesterday's overall leader, had a poor 15th, leaving the two boats from RCYC the main contenders for the title.
Bronze fleet winners were Jill Fleming and Vincent Delaney in Perfection (44).
The 51st Anniversary place was taken by Cheap Thrill (384), sailed by Chris Agar and Lauren Bates form RCYC.
