Solo Open at Ardleigh Sailing Club

by Steve Ede 24 Jun 2019 09:42 BST 22 June 2019

Fourteen visitors made the trip to Ardleigh for the Solo open meeting on Saturday 22 June, they were joined by three local boats. Perfect summer sailing weather greeted the sailors with unbroken sunshine and a fairly steady force 2-3 breeze.

Phil Sturmer made the early running in race 1 after going hard right on the first beat. Father and son Alan and Steve Bishop had an altercation early on which saw Alan doing turns and then retiring. Steve Bishop worked through to take the win, Sturmer managed to hold clear of the chasing pack to take second with Mark Maskell third. Race 2 saw Steve Bishop develop a comfortable lead which almost vanished on the final beat with Maskell closing in fast. Steve Ede recovered from a poor start to get back to third with Alan Bishop close behind.

After a fantastic lunch the fleet headed back afloat for the final race. Maskell dominated the race to take an easy win. The Bishops had another incident, this time at the first mark with Steve having to do turns which prompted him to retire. Roger Wilson lead the chasing pack with Ede in third and Alan Bishop once again in fourth.

Overall Steve Bishop took his first open meeting win from Mark Maskell with Steve Ede in third.
