Hunts Sailing Club Mirror Weekend

by Hannah Rose 16 Jun 2019 22:33 BST 11-12 May 2019

Once again to great acclaim, and prompted by last year's honoured visitors, the Hunts Mirrors rolled into action.

The training day dawned bright and sunny with varying wind. Top coach Rachel Grayson had all the boats following the leader, a greater test of skills than you would imagine, then baffled everyone completely with 'Round the Clock'. One helm was heard to mutter that she'd never had to think so hard! Dramatic skies and some heavy rain followed, then some practice races in the afternoon put everything into practice with some solid roll tack progress.

The Sunday morning dawned with a typical Hunts view of the lake striped with wind/doldrums and nine Mirrors started rigging. Two more visitors turned up to a warm welcome, and along with some equipment swapping (broken gaff on solid boat traded for solid gaff on holey boat), the fleet assembled. Rose and Hutchings took the first race by some way, followed by Harley (s/h) in his newly restored though rather leaky craft. The second race saw a reversal, with Harley speeding to victory, closely followed by Rose/Hutchings' weight disadvantage (or so they claim).

It was all to play for by the final race. Some cockups by Dolphin involving an encounter with a leeward mark and a subsequent pirouette, enabled by some Lasers (no names mentioned), allowed Harley to get ahead. Chased hard with all sails flying by the spitting and swearing of Rose and Hutchings, Harley took the prize!

Another fantastic weekend despite it being often a case of Mirrors on a mirror(-like lake) and thanks to our 4 travelling boats who made it a proper open meeting. Congratulations to George Harley, winner of the Short Horns trophy 2019.
