Saundersfoot Sailing Club has just hosted the 47th Coppet Week open sailing event with 62 boats entering this year from 30 different classes and 19 clubs. With a strong force 4 gusting to force 6 all week the sailing was fantastic and made for an exciting event for both the sailors and spectators.

All five races in the series were sailed at a very high standard with the first race of the week being won by Robin Wood (Llandegfedd) in his International Canoe for which he was awarded the RNLI pennant. The second race saw a change in winner with Rob Kennaugh and Andrew Prosser (Midland) coming through as the leading boat in their Merlin Rocket. Race 3 saw another new winner with youngster Sophie Edwards (Tata) taking first place in her 420 with Ruth Guy as crew. Robin Wood won Race 4 again in his IC and Race 5 once again saw Sophie and Ruth taking top place in their 420.

With all races done the overall winners of Coppet Week 2019 were Rob and Andrew in the Merlin Rocket. Second place went to Gareth Caldwell and Jon Gibbons (Blithfield) in an Osprey and third went to Sophie and Ruth in the 420. Well done to all the sailors who made it out everyday and completed the races, with the testing winds we have seen this week it is a great achievement!

A prize evening was held on the Thursday night and awards were handed out for the fast fleet, slow fleet and several different boat classes. We were also pleased to be able to present £395 to out local RNLI representative Liz Talboys.

Friday, as usual, was an individual race where we send the boats off at different times in a pursuit race. This year a Pico had a 5 minute head start over all the other boats and for a while it looked like he might stay ahead but in the last few minutes the strong winds saw the Ospreys living up to their name and flying down the downwind leg showing they really do rule the waves. First place went to local sailors Dan Jackson and Dave Griffiths (Tenby).

As always Coppet Week would not be possible without the huge man-hours provided by a small team of volunteers. I would also like to thank our sponsors the St Brides Hotel who provided the fantastic prizes for our prize draw. First prize went to visiting Merlin Rocket sailor Matt Smith who will be enjoying a short break with breakfast, dinner and spa session at the St Brides in the near future.

For those of us involved in the organisation of Copper week sailor satisfaction is so important and this year the feedback has been fantastic. The competition on the water and the atmosphere created by the competitors off the water make it the most exciting week of the year at Saundersfoot Sailing Club and I would like to extend my thanks to all who sailed, saved or spectated during the week. We look forward to seeing you back next year.
