9th June is the date of the Windermere Waterhead race, which runs the length of Lake Windemere, staring at Fell Foot in the south, all the way up to the Waterhead buoy off Ambleside, and then back to Fell Foot.
As well as the usual challenge of Windermeres gusty winds, there are various other aspects that make this race unique, including getting past the chain ferry at Ferry Nab, and racing through narrow Bowness Bay with its many tourists in hire boats.
Not for the faint hearted, but if you are up for a challenge see details at www.swsailing.co.uk/sailing-1/open-events-1
If you want to arrive on the Saturday, there is a pre-race social at South Windermere Sailing Club in the evening, where you can pick up some advice on race strategy from the locals.
