Etchells Spring Regatta at Royal London Yacht Club

by Jan Ford 5 May 2019 20:24 BST 27-28 April 2019

Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th April saw the first of the Spring Etchells series. As with all races on the Solent, Saturdays racing was cancelled with 30+knots winds forecast. Sunday saw more favourable conditions with a breeze varying between 10 and 15 knots from the North West.

The first race saw a win for Rob Goddard in newly named Rocketman and a close second the Royal Lymington Youth team sailing with Jaydon Owusu of Greig City Academy as fourth.

Shaun Frohlich with David Bedford and Duncan Truswell went on to dominate the next two races, leading from the front in both and 4-5 boat lengths ahead of the fleet.

It was a great day for the Bedfords with Will Bedford and his youth team taking second in both. This youth team of Will, Will Heritage, Luciue Offord and Will Birch-Tomlinson are preparing to compete in the Etchells Worlds in Texas and they showed their good credentials with a win in the last race.

The Greig City Academy team scored consistent sixth places with a new young helm Jahvarn.

The regatta saw a very pleasing entry from the youth teams - five out of the nine entries were youths. Overall winner was Shaun, Duncan and David on Exabyte 7, second was the Royal London Youth entry (which took first Corinthian entry) and third Rocketman.

The Royal London race committee did a great job getting in four races in quick succession.
