Squibs at the Waldringfield Sailing Club Easter Egg Regatta

by Barry Searle 21 Apr 2019 21:54 BST 19-20 April 2019

Every Easter, Waldringfield SC hosts an open meeting on Good Friday and Easter Saturday. This year a total of 78 dinghies over eight classes competing for trophies and Easter Eggs for winning boats. The weather was outstandingly good with seven Squibs competing, with a moderate NE wind, a strong spring tide and early afternoon high water.

The home fleet were David Cannell/Bill Walker in 40, Richard Davy/David Craig in 49, Barry Searle/Susanne Eddis in 468, Ricky East/Gill Lamb in 745 and Pete and Jen Greatrex in 763. Our visitors were Andy Moore/Pete Hallinan in 902 from FFSC and Will and Roger Harvey from HPYC.

Day 1 comprised three races with 902 (Deben Buoys) as usual getting into their stride winning two races with 468 (Ignite) winning one with 40 (Ruby) and 129 (Dash) all in close contention.

The weather was equally good for day 2 with 129 (Dash) winning the first race with 763 (Gertie) moving up the order. The second race saw 902 returning to first place with 49 (Genesta) moving up. The final race following a late clandestine course change saw 468 (Ignite) doing a long 'two for one' windward mark deviation with Ricky and Gill in 745 (Inachus) moving up to third place.

The winners were Andy and Pete in 902 from Felixstowe Ferry with Will and Roger in 129 from Haven Ports second. Their consistency was notable especially during the second day and was rewarded with large Easter Eggs which were no doubt were quickly consumed.

The weather for the event was perfect with everyone having thoroughly enjoyed the two days racing commenting that the cakes this year were particularly good! Let's hope the weather keeps like this for the coming season!
