Cirdan 2 Rivers Challenge

by Richard Hayden 20 May 2006 11:31 BST 14 May 2006

29 yachts, the largest fleet of local yachts for many years, competed on 14th May in the inaugural Cirdan 2 Rivers Challenge. Clubs from the rivers Colne and Blackwater came together with yachts ranging from the winning boat Spirit of Defiance owned by Julian Lord and Jeff Payne to sports boats to Dolly a Sarum 28 owned by Avril and Jonathan Hall which cooked a full Sunday lunch during the race.

The Cirdan Sailing Trust sponsored the event and provided The Duet one of their fleet as committee boat. Based at Maldon on the Blackwater Cirdan provides young people in particular those who are socially, mentally or physically disadvantaged with the opportunity for self-development from the experience of living and working on large sailing vessels.

The series of races scheduled 4th June, 3rd September and 8th October will raise money for the Trust. The events hope to tempt more cruising sailors out as well as providing the hardened racers with a fun day.
