Racing got underway yesterday for Day 1 of the Murphy & Nye 1720 English National Championships, hosted by the Royal Southern Yacht Club in Hamble. Three races were sailed in strong south westerly winds, from 18 to 33 knots.

The testing conditions challenged both the racing crews and the Race Committee, who called for all boats to changed down to their smaller jibs and fractional kites for Race Two. Many boats opted to stick with the small sail set-up for all three races.

Steve Goacher in Goacher Sails is the current regatta leader with 7 points, in second are the current 1720 Nationals and European Champions Ruairidh and Graeme Scott with 8.5 third is Simon Blake in Sworded Fish on 14 points and in fourth is Mark Greenaway in La Licorne with 17 points.

With three races sailed the fleet now have a valid series but crews are waiting ashore this morning for a decision from the Race Officer as to whether more races can be sailed in the 30 + knots prevailing…
