RS Sailing 2021 - LEADERBOARD

Flying Fifteens still developing the product

by Jonny Fullerton 8 Mar 2019 15:20 GMT 2-3 March 2019

After over 70 years the Flying Fifteen class continues to develop with some interesting refinements. Bill Chard loaned his very shiny new boat (sail number 4069) to be exhibited at the RYA Dinghy Show over the weekend of 2-3 March, 2019.

Flying Fifteens Datchet Man shares some of the key features in his blog: Flying Fifteen Fleet Racing with Datchet Man.

Show Boat features:

  • Central cockpit and mainsheet jammer system
  • Bill opts for the double jammer system
  • Mast Gate area: There's a lot going on upfront in this boat, but a lot of the detailing is very neat. It looks as though the spinnaker setup is skiff style, as per our champions Graham Vials and Chris Turner... no bags, no cockpit sock - nice!
  • Drain Away Genoa Sheet Turret: We've seen this a lot of course, but Bill's set up overall is very neat.
  • Interesting Roller, Stem Fitting and Sleeved Jib Halyard: It was evident that Bill had put a lot of thought into the jib furler, halyard and top fitting (very sexy looking too)... adjustable track too.
  • Very Neat Weight Correctors
  • Forward Shroud Station Controls
  • Interesting Twinning Line System
  • Adjustable Mainsheet Bridle: Bill had fitted an adjustable mainsheet bridle on the boat at the dinghy show. The controls mid cockpit very neat the whole system is well concealed.
  • Twin Spiro Fly Aways: We have a team at our club experimenting with twin Spiro poles. At the Show, Bill Chard had a very thoughtful set up which was attracting lots of attention.
