Alton Water 2019 Fox's Chandlery Frostbite Series - Week 8

by Jenny Pavey 1 Mar 18:20 GMT 24 February 2019

Be careful what you wish for! The penultimate day of this nine-week series brought a beautiful Spring day with ideal conditions at Alton Water for stand-up paddle-boarding, walking, cycling and anything else that didn't involve the need for wind. The water was blue, the sky was blue but the wind didn't blow.

Most sailors didn't bother to rig their boats or get changed and with no wind appearing in time for a first start by 12, the decision was made that there would be no racing that day. Instead, the Committee Boat team took the opportunity to drag Stewart who does the results every week, out of his cupboard for a boat trip round the reservoir.

With no possibility of fitting in a catch-up race this Sunday, just two races remain, followed by the series prize-giving, generously sponsored by Fox's Chandlery for the main awards and Typhoon for the best-placed club prizes.

Wind (and possibly rain) is forecast, so it is possible that, with one more discard coming into play, the series leaders could change at the last minute, particularly in the Fast, Laser and Slow fleets where points are close at the top, so we are looking forward to an exciting finale.

Full results of the series so far can be found at www.altonwater.co.uk/index.php?pid=167&series=480&full_series_fleet=480

Unbeaten by Storm Freya on the final day Well, the 2019 Alton Water Frostbite Series certainly went out with a bang! We were not beaten by Beast from the East last year and we weren't beaten by Storm Freya this year either. Posted on 9 Mar

Just over 60 boats turned out in near-perfect conditions At last we had near-perfect conditions for week 7 of this nine-week series; it was sunny and mild and the only slight negative was that the wind being from anywhere in the south limits the length of the second windward leg. Posted on 22 Feb

Light westerly wind picks up rapidly as forecast No-one could complain that week six of this nine-week series was dull! The forecast was for a light westerly wind to pick up rapidly and swing to the north-west, accompanied by light rain, which was exactly what happened. Posted on 15 Feb

The frustrating, alternating weather pattern continues Amazingly, the frustrating, alternating weather pattern continues and so week 5 brought us another bright but cold and at times virtually windless day, in stark contrast to the unsailable conditions of the previous week. Posted on 8 Feb

We all knew what the wind was going to do, didn't we? Well, we all knew what the wind was going to do this week didn't we? It was a bright day but with a bitterly cold, fresh north-westerly breeze, gusting up to 30 to 40 knots. A good number of competitors turned up but no-one was in any hurry to rig. Posted on 1 Feb

A roller-coaster series of extremes! We could say what a difference a week makes again in this roller-coaster series of extremes! Week three dawned cold and brighter, with very little breeze from the north and an expectation that it would veer north-east that didn't materialise. Posted on 25 Jan

40 sailors launch... many didn't survive the first lap What a difference a week makes! It was a brighter day and warmer, the wind was in the same direction as the previous week but with a lot more of it, plus some vicious gusts of 30+ mph. Posted on 18 Jan
