Burghfield hosted the first of its two annual Optimist Open meetings on a misty Saturday 16th February. Following bacon baps and briefings a gentle 4-6 knots from the south arrived to start racing mid morning.

In the main fleet the less severe U flag was dutifully tried on the first start however the overly keen 50 young sailors pushed the line and the fleet was carried over. PRO David Baddeley abandoned that start and restarted successfully under black flag which continued for the rest of the day. The Burghfield Islands played an important part in tactical decisions with boats making significant gains by navigating a different route from the majority the fleet and finding clearer better breeze.

After lunch the wind increased to 8-10 knots and racing continued to provide a series of 5 races with a mix of inner and outer loop courses. 1st overall was Finian Morris with Sam Webb 2nd Boy and Johnny Sargent 3rd boy. Ella Lightbody was 1st girl and 2nd overall, with Agnes Bracey-Davis 2nd girl and Lila Edwards 3rd girl.

The Regatta fleet of 18 boats led by RO Douglas Calder held their racing just off the club with great viewing from the club balcony. Anna Morris won three of the seven races to win overall and make a clean sweep for the Morris family. Will Hakes with two wins was second and Harry Franklin with one bullet was third.

At the end of the day the obligatory 'Oppie Tea' was enjoyed by all before prize giving of trophies and performance Rooster sailing kit.
