Lymington Town Sailing Club Perisher Series - Day 3

The third race of the Lymington Town Sailing Club's Perisher Series was sailed in much improved conditions compared with the previous week's full-on blow.

With the prospect of high water at the start time combined with a much kinder 10 knot breeze from the north east, the conditions were enough to encourage 44 boats to prepare for a pleasant mornings sailing.

Given the number of entrants, which included visitors from other clubs, the race management hoisted flags to signal separate starts for single and double handers. The starts went off without incident and those competitors equipped with kites made full use of them off the line.

The sun made an appearance which gave some relief from the biting edge of the breeze.

The course required the fleets to sail around Baverstock and 2 moveable marks laid to the east and west of the river mouth attempting to keep out of the ever-increasing ebb tide. The final leg of the race provided a beat back up the river to the club line. Given the fickle breeze and patchy conditions, boats were spread over the entire length of the river and beyond, which resulted in a 50 minute differential between first and last at the finish line.

When the results were published Giles Chipperfield in his D-One came out on top, with Liam Willis in his brand new RS Aero taking second, just 7 seconds behind. In third place were visitors Team Gorringe in their Merlin Rocket.

Race 4 in the series takes place this Sunday 27th January. The river start is at 10.55hrs, with the warm and cosy LTSC clubhouse open for breakfast from 8am.
