Lark National Championship at Sidmouth Sailing Club - Day 1

by Nigel Hufton 19 Aug 2018 10:10 BST 18-21 August 2018

The Larks were greeted by a force 3 South Westerly. This took a while to settle down, giving PRO John Keast an interesting challenge.

Race 1 started with a big right hand shift up the first beat. Dougal & Helen Scott managed to round first. Despite hitting the mark they managed to sail to the win. Chris & Nicola White had an eventful race - on the first reach Chris snapped his toe straps, falling out the boat and snapping his tiller extension. However, they managed to pull through the fleet to finish second with James Goss & Kamila Czartolomna closely behind in third.

Race 2 was a short 30 minute race, making the start and first beat crucial to get right. The wind picked up slightly and the direction stabilized. Following a general recall, the Whites rounded first ahead of a chasing Nigel Hufton & Matt Wood followed by the Scotts. The Whites managed to hold off the chasing fleet to secure first with Hufton & Wood taking second and the Scotts in third.

This left the Whites as overnight leaders, followed by the Scotts, with Hufton/Wood in third.
