RS Tera World Championship at the RS Games, Weymouth & Portland - Overall

by Flynn Davies, UK RS Tera Sport Class Coach 11 Aug 2018 15:25 BST 4-10 August 2018

'A Tale of Two Fleets'

Day one of the RS Tera World Championships at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy brought sun, sea breeze and shifty conditions. With six to nine knots of wind swinging left and right with each phase of lull and pressure inside the harbour. A record 81 entries in the Sport fleet meant that for the first time ever an RS Tera fleet would be flighted. Following three races the 2016 National Champion, Ben Tuttle led by a staggering 21 points, followed by Kiwi Beth Miller. A lesson in consistency for the Pro fleet from day one. Adding to his recent success at the Inland Championships, Max Steele led the sport fleet on count back over reigning National Champ Alice Davis, going in to Day two.

On day two of the RS Tera Worlds sailors were greeted by plenty of sun, but not much wind. Postponed ashore for half an hour, it wasn't long before the wind had filled in to between 6 and 9 and knots, sailors launched at 10:45. With the Sport fleet re-flighted, they were ready to begin their final day of the qualifying series before being split in to Gold and Silver fleet. Race wins went to Ben Tuttle, Beth Miller and Oliver Rayner in the Pro fleet. In the yellow Sport flight, line honours were taken by William James, Max Sydenham and Teddy Dunn, whilst in the blue flight, they were taken by Alice Davis and William Bailey twice. Overall, day two proved to be a tough day for the kids, coaches and race management, with over 6 hours on the water and 100 degrees in wind variation. Heading in to day three Ben Tuttle led the Pros with a gaping 26 point gap ahead of Beth Lewis of New Zealand. In the Sports, Alice Davis led on count back ahead of William Bailey.

On the third day of racing at the RS Tera Worlds in Weymouth the breeze was up to 12-14 knots, just what many of the sailors had been waiting for. The Sport fleet, having completed all six qualifying races, were divided in to Gold and Silver fleets and began their final series. Winners and grinners in the Pro fleet included Tuttle, Blake Tudor and Sophie Johnson. In the Sport Gold fleet, Alice Davis, Olly Peters and Max Steele crossed the line respectively in the three races. Silver fleet successes also went to Megan Rhodes and James Matchette twice. As the sailors came ashore, there were some shaky legs pulling boats up the slipway. Tuttle's lead extended to a whopping 37 points, Miller still in second. Olly Peters headed up the Gold fleet, followed by Max Steele and William James in second and third, both just two points behind. Nickolas Ellis of the Isle of Man led the silver fleet.

Day four of the RS Tera World Championships at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy delivered champagne sailing, with 12-16 knots of wind funnelled through the course by low dark clouds. Tuttle had his sights set on the world title, taking the first win of the day, Abby Hire stepped up to bag a score of 2, 1, 2 and Sophie Johnson won the final race of the day with a comfortable lead. Bullets in the Gold fleet went to William Bailey, Freddie MacLaverty and Gregan Bergmann-Smith. Silver fleet wins were claimed by Ben Stokes, James Carleton and James Matchette. Ben Tuttle, the 2016 National Champion, had now become the 2018 World Champion with a day to spare. Even if Tuttle had two shockers on the last day, counting his previous worst results was still not enough to cost him the championship. Entering the last day Olly Peters led over Alice Davis on count back, William James just one point behind. Nickolas Ellis of the Isle of Man retained his lead in the Silver fleet.

On the final day, the executive decision of the Principal Race Officer, Peter Saxton, to race the RS Aero fleet inside the harbour and based on their ability to cope, proved wise. The wind howled and the rain poured, and with gusts that reached 37 knots, racing for the day was abandoned and the results became final. Truly a tale of two fleets, the Pro fleet experienced the largest championship win margin in class history, while the Sport gold fleet witnessed the closest fought racing in class history; just one point splitting the podium.

This year's World Championship featured a regatta fleet for the first time, run by the Andrew Simpson Watersports Centre on site. This next generation of 20 Tera sailors from across the country, were put through their paces with training and racing all week. In their final results, Poppy Kilpatrick of HISC took 1st place, Alex Sydenham from Dell Quay SC was 2nd, with Wilsonian SC sailor Charlotte White in 3rd.
