RS Tera World Championship at the RS Games, Weymouth & Portland - Day 3

by Flynn Davies, UK RS Tera Sport Class Coach 9 Aug 2018 12:10 BST 4-10 August 2018

On the third day of racing at the RS Tera Worlds at the Weymouth & Portland National Sailing Academy, the breeze was up - just what many of the sailors had been waiting for. The Sport fleet, having completed all six qualifying races, were divided into Gold and Silver fleets and began their final series. Sailors launched at 10:45, sailing out to the race course with 12-14 knots.

Race one in the Pro fleet saw Ben Tuttle add yet another race win to his scoresheet, with Beth Miller close in second. In the Gold fleet, National Sport champ Alice Davis took the win, recovering four places on the last lap, William James second. In the Silver fleet, Megan Rhodes of SWYSA capitalised on many boats sailing the wrong course and snuck in to finish first, followed by Maya Bergmann Smith in second.

The breeze built to between 14 and 18 knots for race two. The chop picked up, particularly in the lower part of the course which tested sailors on their trim. Blake Tudor of Brightlingsea SC hiked hard to first place in race two, Becky Caiger of Sevenoaks School in second. Olly Peters took line honours, ahead of Max Steele in the Sport Gold fleet. South Africa's James Matchette won the Silver fleet, followed by Emil Boie Jensen of Denmark in second.

Wind speeds continued to increase into the last race, reaching up to 22 knots. Sophie Johnson took the win in the windiest race of the day, planing across the finish line, Jack Oakley second. Max Steele of Datchet added a third race win to his tally, overhauling William James who finished second. In the silver fleet Matchette finished first again, ahead of fellow South African Hannah Maria Sasman from Imperial YC.

As the sailors came ashore, there were some shaky legs pulling boats up the slipway. Tuttle's lead extended to a whopping 37 points, Miller still in second. Olly Peters heads up the Gold fleet, followed by Max Steele and William James in second and third, both just two points behind. Nickolas Ellis of the Isle of Man leads the silver fleet. Overall, day three proved to be a big day. Bigger breeze and trickier chop resulted in lots of place changing following day two - a real test of boat speed and technique.
