Cadet World Championship at Bodstedt, Germany - Day 2

Monday dawned full of anticipation. There had been a decent overnight breeze and the forecast was a bit better than the day before.
The first race started in 10 knots, maybe 12 in the gusts and immediately team GBR seemed transformed in the Worlds fleet. The Ukrainian lead most of the way round the course but in pursuit, Hazel Whittle and Gwen Thorogood followed by Lia Fletcher and Mish Collingridge, the sole Russian entry and then Angus Collingridge and Ed Fletcher. By the finish Lia had worked her way past Hazel but three Brits in the top 5 was encouraging to say the least.
Over in the Promos things looked better still for Team GBR. Katie Yelland - fresh from being embarrassed by having happy birthday (Stevie Wonder style - the full 4mins 20s) played to her on stage at the morning prize giving - clearly decided whatever presents she'd been given weren't good enough. With crew Dominic Rowell, Katie was off like a scalded cat to take the win by a country mile. Ever consistent Phoebe Bradshaw with Mimi Slump took second to close the gap on the overnight leader from Poland who was third.
Race 2 of the day saw a big left hander in the last 30 seconds before the Worlds start and a Belgian boat port tacked the start to pop out looking good. After a tricky first beat where it shifted right then further left again Faye Chatterton and Oscar Bush were front Brits ultimately finishing 5th whilst Charlotte Videlo and Tom Shepherd scored an 8th. Not such a good result for GBR - perhaps reflective of the wind starting to drop.
No such problem over on Planet Promo. Birthday girl was on fire yet again - a second consecutive race win followed after a start to finish domination. Phoebe and Mimi second again with Rosie Targett and Sofia Sfaxi rounding out the top 5 although the Pole once again was up there in 4th to hold on to the overall lead.
At this point the wind was softening further but still enough to get a third race in to keep the champs on schedule. Under the black flag they got away at the second attempt and Hazel and Gwen lead around the windward mark and down the first run. Charlotte and Tom rounded in 9th and Angus and Ed in 11th although the latter faded badly on the second round. The wind was dropping and shifting to the west so the boats to the right down the run on port tack were favoured and the Ukrainian took up the lead from Hazel. He was never headed, clearly enjoying the lighter stuff although he's involved in a protest to come tonight still. Hazel finished in 4th with Charlotte rounding out a consistent day with an 11th.
Back to the Promos - this time Team GBR were led by Kate White and Rhona Enkel who shot off from start to finish. Once again Phoebe and Mimi were in the mix and rounded the final mark with yet another Pole in close attention and the birthday girl this time trailing in fourth. She wasn't done yet though, taking advantage of the fight for the top 3 she tacked off into clear wind and sailed calmly past to take 2nd in the last 50m of the race - 1,1,2 on her 15th birthday - not bad vicar!
Phoebe and Mimi held third to go level top over night after some uber-consistent scoring.
There we go, some tired kids, some frustrated parents (aren't there always), a few protests to be sorted overnight and we are 5 races in to a possible 12 in total. Tune in tomorrow. We're streaming live on twitter @gbrcadets.
