Enterprise Easter Egg event at Grafham Water Sailing Club

by Graham Kirkup 28 Mar 2006 09:48 BST 26 March 2006

Mothers day was a test of ones sport over family commitments and Catriona Bevan was tempted to sail only by a floral offering at the clubhouse.

The first of this two part event was held at Hunts SC two weeks earlier and was won by Nigel Bird/ Katie Dolling with the Bevans second.

Grafham proved to be more testing with gusts well over the prevailing force 4-5 SW winds causing the odd spillage. The fleet were close at the first windward mark but a capsize at the first gybe mark saw Kirkup swimming and infuence two following boats to wear round thus Phil/Catriona Bevan and Paul Young/ Jon Woodward got away to tackle the long dead run to the leeward mark to eventually finish in that order.

A wild reach in the afternoon to the start area revealed a biased line with only two boats taking full advantage, however the Bevans caught up and overhauled the temporary leaders. This set the pattern to the finish but not without some cover gybing with Paul Young defending his water from Graham Kirkup at the final leeward mark.

The prizes consisted of Easter eggs all round with a glass fusion decoration commemorating the Enterprise 50 years to the overall winner. Commiserations to Tim and daughter Joanne from Snettisham beach SC who wore themselves out in the first race.
