The 2018 Laser North American Championship took place last week from July 12-15 at the Alamitos Bay Yacht Club in Long Beach, CA. Attracting 161 sailors for four solid days of sailing all three fleets – Laser, Laser Radial, and Laser 4.7 – completed the full 12-race series with two discards.

Olympian and CST member, Brenda Bowskill attended the event in full swing after having taken some time off. As she mentions, "Long Beach was a great place to sail. In the training beforehand, it was too hot for the sea breeze to fill in so we had some light air practice the days leading up to the regatta. As the regatta began on Thursday, the sea breeze began to kick. We had most races in 14-20 knots."

Brenda kept to the top of the leaderboard, followed by fellow CST member Sarah Douglas, placing first and second overall. Both Laser Radial sailors never relinquished their spots and kept a steady pace during the week of racing. Brenda comments on her victory;

"It's been great training since my return after finishing my degree and even better to finally start racing again. In the same week, I received my results for my board examination saying I have passed as an RN and then went on to win the regatta. It was a great week of learning and I'm excited about worlds coming up in a few short weeks."

A mention goes out to CST member Robert Davis for his 6th place finish in the Laser fleet, as well as CSDS member Luke Ruitenberg for placing 16th overall. In the Laser Radial fleet, CSDS member Coralie Vittecoq finished 15th overall.
