Hansa National Championship at Notts County Sailing Club

by David Eberlin 17 Jul 2018 07:04 BST 13-15 July 2018

The Hansa nationals took place at Notts County Sailing Club over 13th to 15th July. A superb 29 entries, the highest for a number of years, arrived from all parts of the UK, including Scotland, Devon the south and north of Britain.

The boats are split into 4 classes the Liberty, 2.3, 303 one person and 303 two person, all are small keelboats so they don't capsize. They can be adapted to suit the disability, so motorised sheets for instance allow more sailors to compete, and several boats have wing mirrors for all round vision.

The first day saw racing start around 2.30pm after a smooth launching procedure using our new pontoons and two hoists. There was a light breeze to start with which became a little fitful, but two races were sailed, and the sun came out later in the day.

Saturday started with sunshine and some fair weather cloud and a mirror like calm, however by about 11am the lake stirred as wisps of wind appeared and it soon steadied enough and filled in so a race took place, followed by lunch.

The afternoon race took time to start as the wind shifted back and forth, but after about 20 minutes it settled and stayed and two races were held back to back.

The Hansa AGM was followed by a championship dinner prepared by Notts County's caterer Pauline.

Sunday was an early start but with more wind gusting 12 knot gusts and it was sunny, capping off an excellent event.

The 2.3 fleet saw Lindsay Burns and Jessica Campbell separated by appoint with a string of first and seconds. Whilst in the 303 One Person Mike Everitt dominated with three firsts to count, the next 4 places had 6 points separating them, showing how close the racing was. The Two person 3030 had a similar domination with Natalia and Alan Hillman winning every race. The Liberty fleet was probably the most keenly fought with only 3 points separating the top three.

Prize giving took place after lunch and there were thanks for the club's enthusiasm and care in making it a successful event.
