RS100s at the Ullswater Lord Birkett Memorial Trophy

by John Richardson 12 Jul 2018 11:01 BST 7-8 July 2018

Six 100s entered which gave us fleet status for the event. Four boats launched on Saturday for the first race.

The OD, keen to get sailing, saw a brief patch of wind and lowered the A P flag. 172 boats launched, with the start line right across the lake off the club. The end of the line on the far shore was impossible to see through the sails and we started after general and on black flag. The lake was like a mill pond with small localized patches of wind appearing in different directions!

Artur Dembinski was doing well at first mark but then I lost sight of him in the crowd. I did not see another 100 for the next two hours. As I approached the top mark the leading boats sailed past back to the finish line, I was looking for a 100 spinnaker but no one was in front of me. I rounded the mark hoisted my kite and made for home. First saw Robert, then Richard and Artur.

Day one John in #441 62nd; Robert in #140 70th; Richard in #122 135th; Artur in #480 148th. 8.32 miles sailed in 4 hours!

Sunday promised more wind, course was set, breeze did a 180 degree shift, the course was changed general recall, spinnakers up, down, etc. Eventually wind settled down and Robert the hit turbo button and finished sixth on handicap, 29th overall and first singlehanded asymmetric. John was 57th and second singlehanded asymmetric. Richard 113th, and fourth singlehanded asymmetric. Artur 154th and seventh asymmetric.

A success (for some) - further humiliation awaits... One of the many great things about the RS100 is the craic within the fleet. Many of us may be far older than we used to be, but that does not mean we really have to have grown up completely does it? Posted on 6 Apr

Pond sailors not convinced of PRO's good idea With a pasty-eaters forecast of Force 4 to 5 for the day the PRO rightly decided to add a race to the day's programme since the next three days are expected to be lighter. The pond sailors were less convinced this was a good idea. Posted on 13 Sep 2019
