Tinker Rally at Bala Sailing Club

by John Rogerson 8 Jul 2018 17:08 BST 30 June - 1 July 2018

Six races were held over the two days. Weather fine both days, wind variable - forecasted for between 6 and 16 m.p.h. which felt about right, and from generally the north east but this depended on where you were on the lake.

The same course was used for the first five races - a windward mark to the north-west of buoy number 1, then A, B, 3, X - all on port. For the last race buoy 3 was dropped. The water was shared with club racing and the visiting Catapult catamarans which made for some "interesting" moments at the windward mark.

Malcolm Ellwood and Perry Milton were disqualified in race one for missing out buoys, this race being won by two-up David and Isobel Birse. The wind over the weekend was very shifty, rounding buoy 3 proving a challenge at times.

Boats very close together on the water could be seen to be sailing in different directions due to differing wind shifts, and occasionally the wind died away altogether. Brian Weatherly, sailing a Tinker for the very first time, soon got the hang of it and overall finished fourth equal with Nigel Kirby.
