J/24 Nationals at Royal Dorset Yacht Club Overall

by Mark Jardine 11 Sep 2000 09:34 BST

The Jardine twins, Stuart & Adrian, have added a fourth J/24 National Championship title to their tally in Weymouth. A first in race 6 was just enough to give them the title with a race to spare. Daryl Conyers also secured second place after this race. Local sailors Bob Turner and Alistair Clarke came third and fourth overall respectively.

The last day dawned with glorious sunshine which gave everyone a chance to dry a few things off after the strong winds followed by mist & rain. Also there was enough to start the racing at the scheduled time and put in two races to make up for the lost day.

Most improved throughout the regatta had to be Angus McPhie in Wave Warrior. Starting the week with a 21st and 17th on the first day and then ending with a 2nd and a 4th moved him up to 7th overall. Also Ben Bennett sailing Jab finished his regatta on a high with a convincing win in the last race. Before this his best result had been 16th!

Many thanks must go to all of those who put in so much effort in Weymouth to make this regatta such a success. The combined Yacht Clubs of Weymouth with David Dunn as Chairman and the host Royal Dorset Yacht Club made the fleet very welcome. PRO Derek Abbott and Dr Frank Newton on the committee boat ‘Sorebones’ set impeccable courses, they had great foresight giving us three races on the Friday, which made great sense when the thick mist rolled in on Saturday causing the abandonment of racing for the day.

Bob Turner and his team from the local Weymouth J/24 fleet did an excellent job securing sponsorship for the event from EDS. Due to this the Combined Weymouth Yacht Club could provide food and beer for the fleet after racing. Further sponsorship was provided by Barnes Ingram Insurance and Tacktick who provided free use of Race Master Compasses to the fleet.
