RYA supports inaugural Maritime Safety Week

by Loretta Spridgeon, RYA 3 Jul 2018 13:13 BST 9-13 July 2018

Maritime Minister, Nusrat Ghani MP, has launched the inaugural Maritime Safety Week, which will run from 9-13 July.

The Minister recognises that safety is absolutely critical to underpinning success at every level and wants to raise awareness and highlight the excellent work which is already being done across our diverse industry to strive for excellence in safety.

Maritime Safety Week has been created to do this and provide a focal point to recognise the contributions and celebrate success.

"As an island nation we have always depended on the seafarers, shipping and the wider maritime industry for our prosperity but safety isn't just a concern for professional mariners who undertake their roles in what are often difficult and dangerous circumstances," says Nusrat.

"All users of the maritime environment, from recreational mariners to casual beach goers, need to understand the risks. We recognise that these groups have very different safety needs and requirements and the scope of Maritime Safety Week is similarly broad," adds the Minister.

The DfT is seeking to stimulate conversations and make connections under the banner of the Maritime Safety Week logo and the hashtags: #martimesafetyweek and #maritimesafetymatters. The department is also welcoming ideas, plans and initiatives from industry using the email address maritimesafety@dft.gov.uk for any queries and assistance.

To support the initiative, the RYA would like to encourage its 110,000 valued members to participate in promoting both the inaugural Maritime Safety Week and its cause through any channels available to them. Throughout the week (9-13 July 2018), Nusrat Ghani MP will be undertaking a series of visits and making a number of announcements.
