RRD One Hour Classic at Circolo Surf Torbole - Day 2

by Circolo Surf Torbole 1 Jul 2018 11:54 BST 29 June - 1 July 2018

After the debut of the foilers on Friday, today a double race with both the categories, slalom and foil, was held.

The first start was made for the One Hour Classic and its 130 competitors but the wind dropped down. It was then the round of the RRD One Hour Foil with the goal to improve the performance of the Polish sailor Maciek Rutkowski who gained yesterday 14 legs in 1h08m28s. And it was Matteo Iachino who bested the result, thanks to better wind conditions, as well as a more appropriate choice of foils related to the wind strength, closing the race with 15 legs in 1h00m29s.

Just at the end of the Foil race, the wind settled down to 12-14 knots, thus allowing the RRD One Hour Classic competitors to compete the slalom race. Fortunately, the wind has maintained throughout the entire hour. The World Cup athletes were near the top, but there were also excellent performances from those who know North Garda well. A great day for Matteo Iachino, who also won the slalom competition (15 legs in 1h00m45s), before the German sailor Malte Reuscher (15 legs 6 minutes later) and the 3rd place of Bruno Martini, from Circolo Surf Torbole (15 legs in 1h02m55s). There was also an excellent 5th place for Thomas Fauster (Circolo Surf Torbole), just behind the Croatian Luka Mratovic.

Among the females, first place went to the Italian sailor Marta Maggetti and second place to the Finnish sailor Rautelin Marianne.

Once again Garda Trentino amazed for its wind conditions. When everybody thought it was going to remain light, it built in strength, allowing the start of the slalom race at 5pm.

"We had already lost the hope of being able to compete the slalom race today, but once again North Garda Lake rewarded us with a nice wind in the late afternoon", said the President of Circolo Surf Torbole Armando Bronzetti. A worthy conclusion of this day that began with a very touching moment in the morning, with the presentation of the trophy entitled to the dear departed athlete of Circolo Surf Torbole, Alberto Menegatti - a wonderful Challenge Trophy in steel and glass, gifted by the family of Alberto in his memory.

Sunday 1st of July will see a new attempt to best legs and times of these first two days of racing. If wind conditions will allow it, racing is scheduled for around 11:30 a.m.
