Optimist Open at Parkstone Yacht Club

by Roger Hakes 15 Jun 2018 10:56 BST 9-10 June 2018

Parkstone Yacht Club welcomed over one hundred young sailors to Poole Harbour over the weekend of 9-10 June to participate in their Optimist open meeting which forms part of the IOCA Southern Traveller Series.

Racing was divided into three fleets, with the 53 boats of the Main fleet sailing in the area of Poole Harbour known as the top triangle, and the Regatta and Coached Regatta fleets – 38 and 17 boats respectively – sailing closer to the yacht club. A Coached Regatta fleet was included for the first time so that more junior sailors could enjoy an open meeting experience in a supportive learning environment.

The wind on Saturday morning exceeded expectations and the fleets launched into a south-easterly breeze of 10 gusting 15 knots which gave all fleets some exciting racing in the sunshine. As the afternoon progressed the breeze faded in line with the forecast and the race teams brought the fleets ashore without completing their intended schedule. After racing the sailors enjoyed a pasta supper in Parkstone's super new clubhouse.

Sunday was trickier with the breeze in a more unstable north-easterly direction blowing 5-8 knots. Concentration was key in identifying shifts and working out how best to take advantage of the ebbing tide. As on Saturday, the breeze dropped just after lunch and N over A was displayed for all fleets in the early afternoon allowing an earlier than scheduled prize giving and getaway.

In the end the Main fleet completed five races, the Regatta fleet eight races and the Coached Regatta fleet eleven races. The Commodore of Parkstone awarded the prizes, with top place in each fleet going to a home boat: Henry Keegan secured Main fleet with an impressive score of 8 points from 4 races, Tom Hakes won a high scoring Regatta fleet on count back, and Barney Bromilow sailed consistently well to come first in the Coached Regatta fleet. During his acceptance speech Henry thanked the race and shore teams who had worked tirelessly to organise a fantastic event.
