Through a very generous donation from the Eric Twiname Trust, Shoreham Sailing Club juniors now have their own dedicated racing buoys and join the older sailors out at sea.
The burgeoning Youth fleet at Shoreham SC have so far had to use small green marks which readily disappear behind the waves but thanks to the Eric Twiname Trust, they now have some fantastic new buoys, which are easily visible and not to be confused with the larger buoys used by the faster fleets.
As part of their training this week, the Youth racers got to experience racing in Merlin Rockets – far larger and more technical than their normal choice of boat, but it provided an exciting opportunity to train with experienced helms in a racing environment. Suitable sacrifices had been made to the weather gods and a nice force 2-3 with glorious sunshine provided the perfect conditions for their introduction to Merlin Rockets. The new crews were put through their paces with three races on a windward leeward course round their easily visible new buoys, and crews and helms alike enjoyed lots of place changing, some spinnaker handling, surfing down waves and only one capsize!
Shoreham Sailing club offers youth race training on dedicated weekends throughout the season and all newcomers are welcome. For more information visit: www.shorehamsailing.org
