Most sailing centres in the Solent and adjacent harbours support a fleet of Scows, small dinghies with an obvious common heritage but differing in detail to varying extents. There are Avon Scows, Bembridge Scows, Chichester Scows, Keyhaven Scows, Lymington River Scows, Palace Quay Scows, West Wight Scows and quite a few older, wooden-hulled boats, raced and cruised by enthusiastic owners of all ages.
The Lymington River Scow Class Association have teamed up with the Royal Lymington YC to host a Rally in Lymington over the week-end of 21/22 July to which all Scow owners are invited. There will be some light-hearted racing, some novelty races and an Award for the best-presented Scow. Advance publicity has generated a lot of interest from as far away as Bembridge and Chichester and the organisers are expecting a good turn-out.
"We're calling this a Celebration of the Scow", said LRSCA Chairman John Evans. "To the best of our knowledge this has never been done before. It will be interesting to see how the different types perform against each other. We are gathering data to produce a local Handicapping system and will be ready to modify this in the light of the first day's racing. The idea is to have fun, compare notes and swap ideas."
The event is being sponsored by RWO, known for their performance sailing equipment and by John Claridge Boats, who build the Lymington River Scow and by A A Coombes who build the Bembridge and West Wight Scows.
