The Coast Guard Foundation, a non-profit organization committed to the education and welfare of all Coast Guard members and their families, announced today that in recognition of New York City's designation as a "Coast Guard City", the organization is providing Coast Guard Sector New York with a $10,000 grant for its Family Activity Center.

In a ceremony yesterday, the United States Coast Guard commandant, Admiral Paul Zukunft officially recognized New York City as the nation's largest official Coast Guard City. The City was represented by Mayor Bill de Blasio, and Staten Island Borough president James Oddo, among other dignitaries.

"The Coast Guard's mission requires understanding between the Coast Guard and the local community," said Susan Ludwig, president, Coast Guard Foundation. "Numerous cities have made special efforts to acknowledge the professional work of the Coast Guard men and women assigned to their area. Making these individuals and their families feel at home is an invaluable contribution to morale and service excellence. We are excited to provide this grant to Sector New York to support its Family Activity Center."

The Coast Guard recognizes Coast Guard Cities that have extended considerations to the Coast Guard family and their dependents. New York City is the 24th U.S. city to be designated by Congress as a Coast Guard City.
