Thousands of online participants are expected to take part in the classic offshore Virtual Rolex China Sea Race from Hong Kong to Subic Bay, Philippines starting Wednesday 28 March.
For the first time in 2018, competitors from all over the world will be able to race alongside the fleet on the Virtual Regatta offshore gaming app. Virtual Regatta is an online sailing game open to the public, based on real events and played using the same course, boats, weather information and timing as the real race.
Established in 1962, the 565nm China Sea Race is one of the worlds' emblematic races. Run under the auspices of RORC, the race is open to IRC racers, classic yachts as well as multihulls including Karl Kwok's MOD 70 Beau Geste, who is aiming to beat the race record held since 2016 by the RP66 Alive of 47h 31m 08s.
By extending its e-sailing coverage to the Rolex China Sea Race, Virtual Regatta confirms its expansion worldwide and the popularity of e-sailing. "We are very pleased to work with the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club and this fantastic race to develop our community throughout the world", says Philippe Guigné, founder of Virtual Regatta.
Robert Stoneley, Commodore of the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club, said "we are pleased to have Virtual Regatta on board for the 29th edition of the Rolex China Sea Race; it's an honour to have sailors from around the world competing in our most established blue water classic. Our members, both on and off the water look forward to the competition on Virtual Regatta."
