The ubiquitous Wayfarer Class celebrated its 60th birthday at the Dinghy Show on Saturday 3rd March. Passers by cannot fail to have noticed the party on the Hartley Boats stand as dozens of supporters, owners, former and future owners of the famous 16 foot dinghy toasted its health with fizz and cake. The toast was made by Roger Proctor, son of the dinghy's designer, Ian Proctor, whose own centenary was celebrated at the Show. It was terrific to see so much interest in the Wayfarer over the whole weekend.
The party goes on! The 2018 UK National Championships, sponsored by Craftinsure and Hartley Boats, will be hosted by Castle Cove SC from 1-3 June 2018. Racing in Weymouth Bay and Portland Harbour will not be new to the Wayfarer Class. Both the International Championships in 2010 and the European Championships in 2014 were held there, hosted by WPNSA. This is the first time that the Wayfarer has returned to Castle Cove, however, since the Club hosted the Wayfarer South Western Area Championships a decade ago.
The aim is to try and match the boat's age by having at least 60 teams competing at the Nationals this year. Boats will be travelling from all over the UK and Ireland to compete and almost 30 entries have already been received. We're very excited about returning to Castle Cove for what is promising to be a very good event.
More information about the event and the entry process can be found at wayfarer.org.uk/2018-ukwa-national-championships and at www.ccsc.org.uk If you are a Wayfarer sailor and would like to enter please note that the early bird discount ends at midnight on Friday 18th March.
